It's depressing to see you haven't written about your exploits for over a month. This is normally due to a month of nothing happening, however this month its because iv been so busy!

My music video was completed, the video isn't set for release till April 1st so i can only show stills till then.

Also this month I was A.C for a Sony Vita promo, I edited a promo for a new West end show Anastasia. I am also shooting another promo for them in a couple of days.

The best night of the year, I was a cockney/geezer/1980s football rioter. A last minute outfit thrown together from costumes from various films.

These shots are from my new camera, the Prakitca Cm1000. All my beloved Olympus stylus 35mm cameras have broken. So the morning before the night above I had to hit the carboot sales and find a new camera! All my other cameras are SLR's or temperamental so i needed a new one! It cost me £2.00 and at that price it comes with a good flash, good lens and Panoramic mode. She's a beauty.

This is a sad day for cinema, the art of the trailer had died. The best part of going to the local cineplex is over. As a child nothing sparked excitement and passion in my heart more than the trailers.

Trailers that griped you with instant suspense, narrated by a deep god like voice that commanded your attention. A voice that made the trailers, made the excitement and made you watch. A voice that spoke of good and evil, the motion picture events of the year, a time long ago, from award winning director and this year....

A voice over that is heard less and less in today's trailers.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK TRAILER - possible the greatest voice over ever heard. These days this trailer would have no voice over and would be full of motion graphic text and After effects transitions that entertain the lowest levels of IQ the same way a sparkler entertains a four year old.

CON AIR provides some amazing voice over lines including... "This summer, check your weapons and take your seat".

The lack of voice overs aside, now we are faced with trailers that forget the rules of the tease. They throw every joke or action shot in your face like a child desperate for attention. THE HANGOVER PART II is a great example of seeing a trailer and having no reason to watch the film, you know you've just seen all the best jokes so why pay to see the other 97 minutes of rubbish. TRANSFORMERS is another example, I have no reason to watch this film now, iv seen it all in a two minutes.

If a voice over can make BEAN - THE MOVIE look good, why are we seeing it less and less!? Trailers take them selves too seriously these days, lets bring back the melodramatic, ostentatious & theatrical lines that make trailers what they should be, trailers not montages.

To those people i say, i don't care about creating this pretentious persona of the moody, arty photographer who's looking for the perfect shot to echo & translate his melancholic depression. That's not to say i don't like to get arty with my shit, but... fundamentally photography is about capturing & sharing those moments that for one reason or another are memorable.

As most shoots do, it starts with me being bored in the hotel room the night before. This was in South End on Sea, a film for a company that cleans the really hard places to get to in restaurants and businesses. I was second camera man for Digifish media productions. There were alot of John Mclane crawling through air vent shots to be had. It was a really great shoot, great guys and a subject that was way more interesting than i first thought.

Later on this week back in the home town, still with Digifish, we shot a film for York University. A promo/guide for there new buildings. This shoot was a lot of fun, a real mix of gear. The film was shot on a Ikegami HL-DV7, Panasonic AG-AF101 & lumix DSLR.

Another great shoot with great people. I fired a couple of snaps during the day.

The weeks nearly over, i gotta shoot the end to my documentary called "This is Ze Suicide" (working title) & gotta shoot a wedding on Saturday. All good!!

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8

This is the first test of my new lens, Tamron 17-50mm 2.8

I was gonna get the Zeiss lens 16-35mm 2.8 - 4.5 but for double the price at £600 i went for the tamron. So far i'm glad i did, I've used the Zeiss lens before and i don't think there's much in it. I prefer having it at 2.8 because like everyone at the moment i love getting a great bokeh effect.

These are from my shoot with Sabrina. It was a really quick & easy shoot. Sabrina is an amazing model and a lovely person, she had great ideas and can strike a pose like no one else! My Minolta 35mm did die on me though! A shame because i had two out of date films from 98 I've been dying to use!

I used my Alpha with an F42 flash & two 175w soft boxes, there not very bright but there cheap and work well to take out shadows from the flash.

My Fun Week

My week began New Years Eve 2010 and in true new years spirit rocked the night away in Newcastle with my good friend Johnny & an Olympus Stylus loaded with out of date B&W Fuji film.

After escaping the most depressing new years party I've ever been too. In which the entertainment consisted of Call of Duty & Viva. Along with a drinking game who's contestants refused to fuel it with Jack or Vodka we hit Newcastle City Center and had a brilliant night. Drinks flowing, friendly folks & pictures to be taken.

The week continued January 3rd when i hit London Town to take in the sights & smells of a city that has seduced so many my age.

At this point i should be saying, here are my photo's of London and below i would proudly display them showing human behaviour, the beauty of decay, the tragedy of human life with a brief of the camera and film used.

Sadly the only Camera i had was my Sony Alpha A580 & it couldn't summon any passion out of me. That's not to say i don't love my camera it's just on the street i only feel snap happy with film.

The week continued further.... 7th of January. Still in the big smoke i was camera man on a Music video for the pop rock band Deportivo.

Above are some screen shots taken from my footage shot on my Alpha A580 (50mm).

I had a great time on the shoot, all really nice folks and a fun video to take part in.

Got back into York at 3am and the week was over. However adventures still lurk my way, tomorrow i shoot new film "Dead Sanity, Return of the Boogle Part III" & i have 3 photo shoots lined up as well as a wedding shoot at the end of the month.

Its nothing clever, just a couple new signs to go round our streets that might cheer people up or remind them to do something good.

I don't really know what the tash one means, but it would make me chuckle as i was going to work.

Hewitt & Walker

The Hewitt & Walker History of Cinema is complete and is being sent around the world. So far the only people who have received a copy are the postmen who keep stealing it. We've had 4 copy's go missing in the post, the letters & cover arrive OK but the disk is always gone. A complement to Jonny who designed the amazing covers.

At the moment we are sending the film to other film makers, actors, directors & critics to get feedback and a hope full "well done, great film" pat on the back.

Then its off to the festivals!! The film had good reviews before completion and was featured on the Paranormal Activity's DVD extras way before we'd got it to the stage its at now. Hopefully the changes & scenes we added will be to our benefit.

Here are some pix i did with Michelle the other day. She was a really great model, loved working with her.

The color pictures are out of date Fuji Velvia. Wish id bought more of this stuff, such a nice grain on it. I was using 2 800w red heads which shine really orange so i was expecting the negs to be really blown out and distorted but they held up well.

Couple of days in Nuke Ass Hole, The colour prints are Kodak 800 from a Praktica Tl100. The B&W are Kodak C41 B&W with my Olympus Stylus which is slowly falling apart.

If you wanna live longer, buy an Olympus Stylus zoom 140. They take terrible day time shots, but in a bar with black and white film there is nothing sexier.

Car boot Saturday! Today was a good day two cameras for £12. My first find was this amazingly named Nippon 35mm. Its as light as a feather with a lens cap that says "camera" on it. According to Google they get sold alot on street corners in New York. The lens front as far as i can tell is all for show, the real lens is a small bit of plastic behind the SLR style front. It only has 3 aperture settings and no focus.

I'm a big holga fan so I'm willing to give this a go.

My next discovery came in the form of a Praktica TL100 with a 80mm-200mm 4.5 Zoom Lens. I probably wont use the Prakitica Body that much, i have another praktica which I'll use the lens on.

I shall post some pictures when i get some!

I did a photoshoot with Nicky Atkinson the other day. The idea was boho/vintage/retro. This is what i got.

These are on a Sony Alpha with the flash bounced off paper. All the color & grains added in Photoshop. I wanted alot of depth to the pictures so on most the pictures the background has been blured more later in post to make Nicky stand out more and to give the feeling of film.

The Flash is temperamental, the shutter is too slow, it only has a fixed focus, the winder doesn't stop, the shutter button is to sensitive... BUT LOOK AT IT!

I bought this for £3 from a gentleman at the world famous York car boot sale. I was disappointed with pictures but for £3 it looks very sexy in my camera collection.

I filmed madness last night at the York Race Course. This was a promo film for there next tour so we also had to interview Suggs and the guitarist.

The interview was an experience. I was on Sound for that and while holding the boom mic Suggs was jabbing me in the stomach and then told me to grow my hair long. Not the easiest band we've interviewed but it was a laugh.

The gig part was pretty good, i was on stage filming at first but couldn't get out so i had to run into the pit. Before the gig i had said to another cameraman it should be an easy pit, no booze flying over us or people crowd surfing, How wrong was i! I've seen Metallica, slipknot and rage, there audiences seemed pretty tame to the scum bags in the front row at last nights gig. Skin heads and mods throwing each other over barrier. Apart from that, they put on a pretty good show. As per usual i took a few stills while recording.

I filmed the script couple nights ago at the Manchester Arena, really nice blokes and they put on a good show!

Party after was good, i was wasted and kept calling the drummer from the hoosiers Jarvis Cocker which at the time seemed well funny.

I took a coupe of stills on my camera while i was filming. I was on stage hiding behind guitar amp.

Praktica LTL3

My new £5 Praktica LTL3 from the carboot sale.

Unlike the picture above from google image, mine has a 58mm fixed lense. At first i thought that would be a problem but now i love it. You can get so close and it keeps focus really well. Max apature is 2 and the shutter goes from 1 Second to 1000/1 so loads to play with. The pictures below are with Kodak 800. I really need to start testing out my cameras some other way than with my dogs or on the trampoline.

Cosmic Symbol

My new camera, A lovley 70s LOMO Cosmic Symbol. I got this from the car boot a few weeks ago, i think i paid about £3.50 for it. From what i have read millions of these cameras where made but looking at the Lomography web site it appears to have very few people using it today. What a shame...

These pictures were taken on my favorite film Kodak B&W C41 400. The lense is great, the pictures that are focused correctly look so sharp. For the last few months i have been using my 35mm Olympus Compact which has taught me some bad habits about focusing, i have been relying on the camera to do all the work. So now picking up the Cosmic i was a bit useless with a manual focus.

I have a couple of model shoots coming up next month, I'm going to scout eBay and the car boots for some out of date colour film and try and get a real Ellen Von Unwerth style going with this camera.

We began filming on Vietnam war movie, HUNTER yesterday. This film is the brutal depiction of two soldiers left to die in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. They are pushed to there limits and attempt a daring escape, only soon they relies something worse awaits them in the jungle.

This film will feature on the Hewitt & Walker History of Cinema which we hope to have finished this summer.
